Watch: Errol Morris Looks at Sports Fandom After Death with “Team Spirit” Short

I guess this short film is technically an advertisement for another cable channel, but it’s a new short film by Errol Morris, so how can I resist? Titled Team Spirit, the eight-minute piece looks into the idea of retaining your sports fandom in the afterlife, particularly through special burial plans involving jersey’s rather than fancy dress and even caskets licensed by Major League Baseball. We learn of hardcore fans of the Chicago Cubs, the Baltimore Orioles, NASCAR, the Dallas Cowboys and other teams and sports.

As Jay Cheel writes at The Documentary Blog, this short definitely goes well with Morris’ classic pet cemetery doc, Gates of Heaven. It also reminds me a little bit of his piece on movies and movie fans for the 2002 Academy Awards. The filmmaker makes docs like nobody else, and his commercials (for Apple and Miller High Life) and other commissioned works are also distinct and remarkable.
